The National Film Board of Canada is proud to offer unparalleled access to the incomparable work of Norman McLaren with a box set of seven DVDs, bringing together the complete works of Canada's best known filmmaker. From his initial experiments in Scotland in 1933 to his final NFB film in 1983, the films form an extraordinary body of work remarkable for its inventiveness, research and humanism. A master of experimental film, influenced by surrealism, and passionate about dance and music, McLaren was a complex artist whose filmography is both prolific and brilliant.

The National Film Board of Canada wanted to display McLaren's art in a way that would let everyone appreciate his genius. It was this that led to the production of this box set of seven DVDs, incorporating 58 McLaren films.

Also included are many of his tests and unfinished films, which shed new light on his creative process and make it possible for the serious critic, student and film lover to discover the artist at work in his studio. To provide a thematic analysis of McLaren's work, fourteen short documentaries were made specifically for this project, providing remarkable access to the impressive filmography of the artist who created the film classic Neighbours. They guide the viewer to the heart of McLaren's art, each film offering a distinct perspective on his work. The documentaries are organized by theme, the result of a collaboration with Canada's leading experts on McLaren's art, including Donald McWilliams, Marco de Blois and Marcel Jean.

Additional material in the box set includes several filmed interviews with Norman McLaren and numerous audio clips, as well as extracts from texts in which the artist comments on his own films. It goes without saying that this project called for close attention to technical quality.

This edition was produced from the best elements preserved in the vaults at the National Film Board of Canada, the National Archives of Canada and the Cinémathèque québécoise. One of the challenges was to restore the freshness of the films without betraying the original with too much cleaning, which might have erased artefacts resulting not from the passage of time but from limitations in the techniques used in the production process. McLaren's methods were, in fact, those of a craftsman, decidedly imperfect compared to what digital technologies make possible today. To preserve the historical authenticity of his works, it was therefore essential for us to preserve their imperfections as well. Restoration work was also done on the soundtracks for all McLaren's films with sound.

The NFB hopes this box set will provide new generations of film lovers with an opportunity to discover McLaren's films under the best possible conditions. It is the result of the work of a team of experts dedicated to ensuring the highest standards of artistic and technical quality.
